On February 15, 2025, I was awarded the John West Prize for Groundbreaking Hypoxia Research for my work on Mabel Purefoy FitzGerald. The prize was awarded after I presented an invited lecture about Mabel at the prestigious International Hypoxia Symposium at Chateau Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.

In 2019, Sir Peter Ratcliffe, William Kaelin and Gregg Semenza won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to the availability of oxygen."

In the opening slide of his acceptance speech, Sir Ratcliffe lauded Mabel Purefoy FitzGerald for her pioneering work demonstrating the extreme sensitivity of the hypoxia system.
